Exercise for Science — helping you use this site
Updated: August 2023
This website is run by Exercise for Science. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this site, regardless of technology or ability, so we’re continually working to improve accessibility and usability.
This website aims to conform with World Wide Web Consortium (WC3) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, which explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. Meeting these guidelines will help make the web more user-friendly for everyone.
Exercise for Science is a not-for-profit organisation working alongside Public Health England. While not obliged to fulfil the same accessibility requirements as Government organisations, we are working to meet them as closely as possible, at the same time following .Gov advice that accessibility compliance shouldn’t compromise our ability to help the most people.
We’ve built this site using Squarespace 7.0, a platform designed with accessibility in mind, with a range of features that help make it accessible and easy to use. This platform also includes some features that may limit accessibility, which we’ve explained below.
Making this site accessible for everyone
The site displays correctly on all conventional devices and browsers and is optimised for mobile devices. It’s also optimised for site readers (with a few exceptions listed below). We’ve reviewed the site using UserWay’s compatibility scoring system and made adjustments based on the results.
Here are some of the provisions we’ve made to increase accessibility:
All pages have named titles, including navigation items.
All buttons describe where they go or what they do.
All page images have Alt-text descriptions.
The site content is written in plain English as far as possible (with the exception of the previously published scientific papers we’ve included).
Text sizes follow a hierarchy according to importance, with generous line spacing.
We’ve installed UserWay’s accessibility widget, which you can use to access a range of features designed to make browsing this site easier.
We’ve included page descriptions for all navigation pages and feature pages.
Limitations
There are some aspects of this site that we’re unable to change within the constraints of the platform we’re using. This limits how far we can conform with all WCAG 2.1 criteria. In particular:
We cannot add a description or ALT text to buttons that are not editable in the platform. This includes Social icons, and Read More and Arrow buttons.
We cannot add Alt-text to images that are not editable in the platform. This includes background images.
We will continue looking for ways to bring all areas of this site up to the same level of accessibility. Meanwhile, if you are having difficulty with any part of our site, please contact info@exerciseforscience.org. We’re here to help.
